Over at James5 there was a link to this article entitled “Airport Security” written by Jeffrey Goldberg. While I was reading it I did find it entertaining but afterwards when I thought about it I wondered what would happen if Mr Goldberg looked a little more “ethnic”? Would he have been able to do the things he did if he had looked Lebanese or Syrian?

Even if he was Asian, Hispanic or Black? I can imagine these people having a hard time getting a wet towel through airport security while Mr Goldberg and his friend Mr Schneier dance around with their fake boarding passes and saline solution.

It’s not that I don’t agree with what Mr Goldberg writes, it’s just that his article suggest it’s all a walk in the park when the reality for some people is quite the opposite. Racism still prevails and it’s unfortunate that there’s not really much one can do to address this. The media proliferate the stereo type of the Middle Eastern terrorist and the TSA employees will be trained to look out for anyone with a beard or a turban.
